Applying Your Skills: Working alongside senior mechanical engineers you will receive training in conducting forensic investigations, identifying the root cause of mechanical failures and accidents, and in how to present your findings. You will learn how the business is managed and become familiar with their clients, typically law firms, insurers, adjusters, public bodies and end‑user organisations. The work will encompass plant and machinery, industrial equipment, vehicles, consumer products, workplace safety matters and incidents involving mobile or agricultural machinery.

Your Role: The investigation of failures affecting a wide range of mechanical systems, machinery and equipment. You will consider the implications of design, manufacture, installation, operation, maintenance, materials, loading, environmental factors and human interaction. Investigations may involve factory machinery accidents, manual handling incidents, exposure to harmful substances, fires and explosions, failures of lifting equipment, mobility aids, access systems, and defects in everyday consumer products. Your findings, which will identify the cause of the failure, will take the form of a clear report that can be understood by those from a non‑technical background whilst being able to withstand scrutiny from legal, insurance and technical professionals. When fully experienced and ready, you may occasionally be called upon as an expert witness during litigation.

Profile Required  You should be a degree qualified  with a 2:1 or above in mechanical engineering and be chartered or on course to  achieve chartered status. A minimum of five years’ industry experience is required, this could be in areas such as design consulting, commissioning, operations and maintenance, certification, and related fields. The role provides exceptional variety with a constant stream of fresh challenges requiring strong lateral thinking and deductive reasoning skills.
